Your Draft Day

I love sports. It teaches people how to relate with a variety of different people, from every kind of background. I get excited to see a team come from nothing to a well-oiled machine in just a short period of time. People who you wouldn’t think would step up, do and the others you thought were the leaders fall. The way these teams come together is very strategic, they know what they need as a unit, then go out and find those people with the exact talent they need.  This is why when you are selecting the people that are going to be in your inner circle, you select them with a purpose.  This is your draft day.

This relates to life as we know it. Eric Thomas created a presentation regarding this. He said that you should surround yourself with, who you are trying to become. He broke it down to 4 groups; Mentors, friends, family, and other relationships.  So, how do you set up your draft day?

Group #1 – Mentors

A mentor is an experienced and trusted adviser. You must choose someone who you look up to and one that is successful in the field that you are going into. Someone who falls in line with the goals of your future. Best advise is to have a mentor for everything. Example goal # 1: get into the best shape of your life! Get an in-shape trainer, mentor to teach you exactly what needs to be done to reach the level of success fitness. Example goal # 2: being a procrastinator, please, please, please do not get a mentor who is also a procrastinator! Please find someone who will hold you accountable each time they see you.

Group #2 – Friends, Friends, friends…

This group is critical, this group will either make or break you. Always keep in the back of your mind that you are the average of the 5 people you associate with. So, if you associate with millionaires, then you will be a millionaire or on your way to making millions. If you associate with criminals, then you will be on your way to becoming a criminal or you already are one. If you associate with liars, you will become a liar. This is a profound statement. Few people take the time to sit around and think about the traits of their friends, or the way their friends treat them. If you are becoming a better person when you are around them and achieving your goals, then maybe those are the right people. If you keep putting off things that are associated with your goals because of your friends, then it is time to reevaluate your friendships. Please choose carefully!

Group #3 – Family

The family is probably the hardest topic for me because I have never been close to anyone in my family besides my father (God rest his soul). So, I chose not to be around them. They are all good people, but I always felt like I wouldn’t be able to grow around them. In their eyes, I was the sibling that was damaged because I had been through so much in my life that they couldn’t relate to. The one thing I did learn is that sometimes you must separate yourself from negative family to feed your focus and find your purpose.

Group #4 – Intimate Relationships

Finally, relationships. Only keep and create healthy ones. What does a healthy relationship even mean?  To me, it is a relationship that is built to build each other up and be strongest when you are around those people. What they are not is jealous, always arguing, and tearing each other down. I believe that healthy relationships can take you to the next level in life and in success.

How Does This Tie Together?

Have your draft day.  Go out and recruit your team. Write down what you need and who you think may fit those things. Be diligent in who YOU choose to be around you, mentoring you, loving you, and being there for you. Then go one step further and be that person to someone who you genuinely care about. Find people who you can help get to the next level and bring them with you there. Make sure that each year re-evaluate your team and continue to have your draft day annually. Keep killin’ the game of life and know that there is always room for improvement.
