Top 3 Qualities of Highly Recruited Athletes
Being able to play at the next level is a dream for many young athletes. There are many youth and teens that have the talent and skill set to go to the next level but what are coaches and recruiters actually looking for? Through research there have been many attributes that have surfaced, but we are going to look at the top three.
Leadership:
the type of leadership I am talking about is not being a dictator, but having the ability to show by example. The discipline to show up early and leave late. Helping others who are apart of the same team to rise up and be their best. Some of the best leaders do not brag or boast they ‘DO’. They showcase their talent with confidence and encourage others to the same.
Work ethic:
It has been said many times that hard work beats talent that doesn’t work hard. Having a work ethic is one of the most important aspects of anything you accomplish not only in sports but also in life. When struggles arise what is the response? Is it to move forward or quit? Live by the motto “I don’t quit when it’s hard I quit when I’m done”. Set a routine for yourself and make sure small daily tasks get done each day; to do so will take discipline and dedication.
Character:
Equally as important is the character component. How do you treat people on and off the field really matters. Are you trustworthy? Do you stand for something? This is probably the most difficult task to be consistent with. Every day we have choices that will impact character. In doing workouts do you cheat on reps when the coach isn’t looking? If the gas station clerk gives you more change than you were suppose to get back, do you walk off with it or turn it in? All of these are impertinent questions that can and will shape your character. Be the person you look up to in life, so you can become an inspiration to others.
Knowledge is the key to power. Knowing what coaches are looking for will help you become more likely recruited as you climb the latter of success. Having these attributes will help you as an athlete and also as a person! Good luck and work hard!
